2013 Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll - No. 2
By Chad Waller, NAIA Director of Communications and Sports Information
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the seventh-straight week, Concordia (Calif.) in on top of the 2013 Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Eagles, who own a 46-match win streak dating back to the start of 2012, corralled 622 total points and 21 first-place votes. They become just the fifth program since 2000 to notch 10-or-more No. 1 rankings. Concordia goes for consecutive-win No. 47 on Saturday at San Diego Christian.
Texas at Brownsville, for the second-straight week, locks down the second spot and grabs the remaining first-place vote. The Ocelots stand 9-0 on the young season and have recorded four Top-25 victories already. They tallied 602 total points.
No. 3 Biola (Calif.), with 582 total points, pushes up one position. Off to a 9-0 start, the Eagles face No. 22 The Master's (Calif.) on Saturday in the lone Top 25 matchup of the weekend.
Improving two positions and posting 546 points, No. 4 Madonna (Mich.) boasts its highest rankings in eight years. This is the first top-five ranking for the Crusaders since 2008 and the highest spot since Nov. 16, 2005 when they were No. 4. The 15-0 start marks the second-most wins among all undefeated teams.
Also making a jump up, No. 5 Midland (Neb.) betters its ranking three positions with 535 total points. The ranking is the highest in school history, thanks in large part to a program-record 19-0 start.
After the first Top 25 poll saw five newcomers, this time No. 25 Hastings (Neb.) is the lone rookie. The Broncos were last ranked during the 2012 season, posting a total of 11 times in the top 10. Hastings is 10-5 on the year, which includes a 6-2 stretch.
After dropping a match to unranked Bethel (Ind.) on Sept. 13, Indiana Wesleyan (No. 20) falls out this week. The Wildcats have their streak of 23-straight rankings halted, which was seventh on the active list.
No. 5 Midland is this week's biggest mover with a three-spot improvement. Conversely, No. 17 Viterbo (Wis.) tumbles the farthest down four slots.
Thirteen of 23 conferences are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Golden State Athletic Conference with five ranked teams, Concordia, Biola, No. 9 Westmont (Calif.), No. 19 Vanguard (Calif.) and No. 22 The Master's. The Great Plains Athletic Conference lands four programs in the poll.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The third regular-season Top 25 will be announced Sept. 24.
