KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Javier Carbajal of Cumberlands (Ky.) has been named the NAIA National Wrestler of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Carbajal was selected based on his performances from Jan. 13 – 19 and was chosen out of a pool of nominees from the four Qualifying Groups.
Carbajal, a sophomore from Homestead, Fla., compiled a 3-0 record, including two wins against ranked wrestlers, en route to the 125-pound title at the Missouri Valley College Invitational Jan. 17 – 18 in Marshall, Mo. After opening the event with a bye through the first two rounds, Carbajal claimed a 9-0 major decision against Andrew Gorman of William Penn (Iowa) in the quarterfinals. He then knocked off then-No. 12 Dennis Welch of Missouri Valley, 8-3, in the semifinals, before claiming a 4-3 decision against then-No. 8 Kristoph McKinley of Indiana Tech.
On the season, Carbajal owns a 25-4 overall record and an 8-0 mark against NAIA opponents.
