KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Verone Chambers of Oklahoma Baptist has been named the NAIA National Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week and Sarah Wenzel of Ashford (Iowa) has been selected as the NAIA National Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, the national office announced on Wednesday. Chambers and Wenzel were chosen based on their performances from Feb. 13 – 19. This selection marks the final national weekly award of the 2012 indoor track season.

Chambers, a senior sprinter from Clarendon, Jamaica, remained undefeated this season as she has dominated the field in the 400 meters at the 2012 Nebraska Tune-Up on Feb. 17. She out-kicked teammate Stacy Warrior to post an NAIA-best and school record time of 54.17 in the event. In addition to the 400-meter dash, Chambers ran the anchor leg of the Bison’s NAIA-leading 4x400 meter relay team that won at the Tune-Up with a new NAIA-top time of 3:43.22. She also clocked in at 24.73 in the 200 meters to earn second place honors, respectively. Chambers has now been named Indoor Track Athlete of the Week four times in her career, including her previous Jan. 18 selection, to go with her 13 national championships and 19 NAIA All-American mentions.

Wenzel, a native of Clinton, Iowa, took home four first-place honors this week in the long jump and triple jump. The junior highlighted the week with an individual title, school record and NAIA “B” standard qualifying mark of 36-7 in the triple jump at the A.Y. McDonald Invitational on Feb. 18. She also beat out 20 others for first-place in the long jump with a leap of 17-1 ½. Wenzel opened the week’s action on Feb. 16 with individual titles in the triple jump and long jump with marks of 35-1 and 16-9 ¼ at a triangular meet featuring Ashford, NCAA Division III Augustana (Ill.) and St. Ambrose (Iowa). She currently ranks 15th nationally in the women’s triple jump.
