Lubbock Christian Takes Down No. 7 Saints

SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 18) - Lubbock Christian (Texas) overcame 35 turnovers and a 19 point second half deficit, taking advantage of four technical fouls and 32 free throw attempts in the second half to rally and defeat No. 7 Our Lady of the Lake (Texas), 82-80, closing out play in the 2012 Halo Classic Saturday night.
With full court pressure from OLLU, LCU had 10 turnovers in the first six minutes of play and ended the first half with 20 turnovers. A year ago, LCU had a program record high 37 turnovers against the Saints and their pressure defense. With 12:01 remaining in the first half, the Chaps were jump started by a technical foul on OLLU's Robert Martinez and Tyler Kennedy made 1 out-of 2 of the technical free-throws and then a three-point field goal to start a 12-0 run to tie the game at 18-18 with 8:26 remaining in the opening half. The momentum would not stay with the Chaps, as OLLU turned around and started a 10-0 run that LCU ended with a Jabril Durham field goal with 4:45 remaining in the first half. LCU shot 42.8% (9-21) from the field compared to OLLU's 39% (16/41) in the opening half. OLLU had six two-point field goals and nine three-point field goals, while LCU's 20 turnovers limited them to 20 less field goals in the half and OLLU took a 13 point lead into the halftime (44-31).
OLLU opened the second half with a 15-9 scoring advantage and had their biggest lead of the game at 19 points (59-41) with 15:07 remaining in the game. LCU responded with an 8-0 run to cut OLLU lead to 11 points before OLLU ended the LCU run with a three-point field goal by Lo'Ron Smith with 13:13 left. Following the three-point field goal to extend OLLU's lead back to 14 points, LCU went on an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to five points with 11:39 remaining. It seemed as if LCU had the momentum but OLLU answered and had the Chaps down 10 (71-61) with 10:00 minutes in regulation. The Chaps continued to chip away and with 2:02 remaining in regulation, Jamaal Crayton made two free throws to take the lead 78-77, which was their first lead of the game. OLLU was whistled for four technical fouls in the game, with three coming in the second half. Combined the technical fouls, OLLU was also whistled for 17 additional infractions in the half leading to 32 free-throw attempts for LCU in the half. They converted on 24 of the free-throws and it represented 24 of their 51 points in the half.
LCU took advantage of 35 of 48 (73%) free throws overall in the contest, with OLLU converting 12 of 19 (63%) free throws. LCU was 21 of 46 (45.5%) from the field and OLLU was 27 of 76 (35.5%). LCU received double digit points from five players led by AJ Lucky with 18. He was joined by Jamaal Crayton (10), Jabril Durham (11), Tyler Kennedy (15) and Eli Baker (15). OLLU received double figures in points Lo'Ron Smith with 26 and Robert Martinez with 19. Smith was 10-of-14 from the field and 6-of-8 from long range before fouling out.
No. 7 Our Lady of the Lake falls to 0-3, while LCU moves to 3-4 on the season. LCU holds a 4-2 series advantage all-time against OLLU. The Chaps won the prior meeting 110-78 earlier this season (Nov.6) to sweep the season home-and-home series.
LCU will return home Tuesday to host Arlington Baptist College in a game rescheduled to 7:15 PM to assist with ABC's travel efforts.
