D-II Men Head to Round Two Friday

The first round of the 15th Annual NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship is complete after eight more games on day two of the tournament. The 2006 event is being held at Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks (Mo.).

The day opened with a pair of upsets as Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) defeated 11th seed Southwestern (Kan.) 75-60 followed by MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) defeating sixth seed Indiana Southeast 72-62. The two unseeded teams will meet in the second round on Friday, March 10 at 10:15 am.

Oregon Tech was the first seeded team to advance on day two as they defeated Northwestern College (Iowa) 92-83. The 14th-seeded Hustlin' Owls, the 2004 National Champions, will face 2005 defending champion Walsh on Friday, March 10 at 1:45 pm. The third seeded Cavaliers defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 65-50.

Second-seed Huntington (Ind.) blitzed Fisher (Mass.) 99-58 to advance to the second round. The Mid-Central College Champions will face Evangel on Friday at 5:45 pm. The Crusaders, the fourth HAAC team to advance to the second round, defeated Bellevue (Neb.) 82-74.

Morningside College (Iowa), the tenth seed, withstood a Cornerstone comeback bid and defeated the Golden Eagles 87-84. The Mustangs, the only one of four GPAC teams to advance to the second round, will play Warner Pacific (Ore.) in the last game of the second round which will begin at 9:15 pm. Seventh seed Warner Pacific defeated Holy Names (Calif.) 83-73 in the last game of the first round.

The 32-team, single elimination tournament continues Thursday, March 9, with the remaining eight games of the first round. Friday features eight games in the second round, with the quarterfinal round on Saturday. The semifinal round will begin on Monday, March 13, followed by the championship game on Tuesday, March 14 at 8:30 pm.
