Concordia and Robert Morris will tangle at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., on Saturday. Both offenses will come into the game ranked among the top 10 in scoring.
No. 3 Oklahoma Baptist stays put with 293 total points. The Bison have been ranked in the top 10 for the last 10 polls dating back to last season. Moving up one spot is fourth-ranked Shorter (Ga.) with 282 points. Last week, the Hawks enjoyed their highest ranking since the 2000 – 01 season. With 265 points, No. 5 Rogers State (Okla.) is in the top five for the first time since a No. 1 position during the 2008 – 09 season.
No. 13 Southern Poly (Ga.) was one of the biggest movers within the poll, sliding up five slots. The Hornets dropped then-No. 4 Georgetown (Ky.), 82-77, on Dec. 10 for their fourth-straight win. No. 16 Southern Nazarene (Okla.) fell the farthest with a three spot fall.
No. 21 Xavier (La.) and No. 25 Campbellsville (Ky.) are this week’s newcomers. Xavier was listed 21st in the preseason poll. The Tigers are ranked for the first time since the 2010-11 Preseason Top 25 on Oct. 25, 2010, when they were 17th.
Tougaloo (Miss.) (No. 20) and defending national champion Pikeville (Ky.) (No. 22) both fell out of the Top 25.
Eleven of the 12 conference/independent/unaffiliated groups are mentioned in the poll. The Golden State Athletic Conference, Mid-South Conference and Sooner Athletic Conference each place four teams in the ranking for the second time in as many weeks. Five other leagues landed a pair of programs among the Top 25.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conference/independent/unaffiliated groups. The third regular-season Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll will be announced on Jan. 9, 2012.
NOTES: (All information dates back to 2000 – 01 season) There have been 33 different teams to be ranked at some point this season… Seven teams remain undefeated led by the 11-0 mark of No. 4 Shorter (Ga.)… No. 19 Montana State-Northern leads all NAIA schools with 12 victories… In three polls this year (including Preseason), at least two teams have split the first-place votes… No. 11 Mountain State (W.Va.) falls out of the top 10 for the first time since Feb. 18, 2003... The Cougars boast the longest active stretch of consecutive rankings with 136-straight weeks; No. 6 Georgetown (Ky.) is next with 68, followed by No. 7 Texas Wesleyan at 45 and No. 3 Oklahoma Baptist at 40… Mountain State has the most No. 1 rankings since 2000 – the Cougars have been No. 1 a total of 48 times since 2000, which marks the highest total of any program in that span; Robert Morris (Ill.) is second with 23 No. 1s and Concordia (Calif.) follows with 10 mentions… Robert Morris is the only program to start and end a season ranked No. 1, doing so during the 2006 – 07 season.
