By Chad Waller, NAIA Director of Communications & Sports Information
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Brandon Jackson of Oklahoma Christian has been honored as the NAIA National Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of The Week and Leon Robinson of Embry-Riddle (Fla.) has been named the NAIA National Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of The Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Jackson and Robinson were selected based on their performances from March 12 - 18.
Gary, an Indianapolis, Ind., native, proved to be the conference's top high jumper at the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) championships on Feb. 18. The freshman's high jump of 7 - 0 ¼ placed him first in the field of 10 and gave him the top high jump mark in the NAIA this season. For that effort, Gary earned the Outstanding Performer award at the event and landed himself on the WHAC All-Conference team.
Robinson, a junior from Tampa, Fla., shined for the Eagles at the University of South Florida Bulls Invitational on March 16. He earned "A" standards in both the 100-meter and 200-meter runs. In the 100-meters, Robinson was the top-place collegiate finisher and third overall amongst 35 runners. He collected a mark of 10.43 as the top-two competitors ran unattached. He also was the top collegiate finisher in the 200-meters and second overall, placing behind an unattached semi-professional runner. Robinson finished ahead of athletes from Rutgers (N.J.), Alabama, Florida State, Marquette (Wis.) and South Florida, among other NCAA Division I schools. His time in the 100 is currently listed as the fastest time in the NAIA this year, while his 200 time is the second-best time in the country.
