Baseball Pitcher & Player of the Week - No. 8
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Mitch Crocker of Westmont (Calif.) has been named the NAIA National Baseball Pitcher of the Week and Joe Williams of Sterling (Kan.) has been tabbed National Baseball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Crocker and Williams were selected based on their performances from April 23 - 29 and were chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings. Williams is the second representative from the Warriors this season, as teammate Daniel Hall received the weekly honor on March 20.
Crocker, a native of Porterville, Calif., earned three must-win victories for the Warriors against Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) rival Vanguard (Calif.) on April 27 - 28, propelling Westmont into the GSAC postseason tournament for the first time in 15 years. For the week, Crocker allowed two runs on ten hits over 12 2/3 innings pitched. He also struck out nine and walking three. In game one of the April 28 doubleheader, he surrendered only one hit over the final 2 1/3 innings as Westmont rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn the 10-9 victory. Crocker picked up his third straight victory in game two with a nine-inning complete game performance.
On the season, Crocker owns a 6-2 record and 3.88 earned run average over 58.0 innings pitched.
Williams, a native of Compton, Calif., hit .600 (12-for-20) with four doubles, three home runs, seven RBIs and six runs scored in four games to lead Sterling to the top seed in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) tournament and a share of the KCAC regular-season title. The junior middle infielder highlighted the week with a 4-for-6 effort in game one of a doubleheader against Tabor (Kan.) on April 28. With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Williams earned the game-winning RBI with a two-out single.
Williams, who is currently riding a seven game multi-hit streak, leads Sterling with 173 at-bats and 19 doubles this season, while his .399 batting average ranks second to only Tom Schwartz (.407).
