KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jameel Bryant of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) has been named the NAIA National Wrestler of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Bryant, who is the third Blue Raider to win the award this season, was selected based on his performances from Feb. 3 – 9 and was chosen out of a pool of nominees from the four Qualifying Groups.
Bryant, a native of St. Petersburg, Fla., logged a 3-0 record to help the Blue Raiders to a 2-1 record for the week, including dual wins over then-No. 10 Cumberland (Tenn.) and then-No. 20 Life (Ga.). Lindsey Wilson’s lone loss for the week came against then-No. 8 Indiana Tech. In the Blue Raiders’ Feb. 4 dual against Cumberland, the 184-pound senior knocked off No. 3 Cody Linton by a 3-2 decision. Bryant carried that momentum into last Friday’s events, earning victories against No. 5 Trey Hicks of Life, 3-2, and Indiana Tech’s L.J. Grayson, 15-8.
On the year, Bryant, who is the defending NAIA national champion at 184 pounds, is 21-4 and 13-1 in duals. He is also a perfect 10-0 against NAIA competition.
