April 25, 2012
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Marcelo Alecio of Bethany (Kan.) has been named NAIA Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Alecio was selected based on his performances from April 16 – 22 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated group player of the week selections. Alecio is the first from the Bethany men’s tennis program to collect national weekly honors since the award began last season.
Alecio enjoyed a perfect week at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, going 3-0 in each. The junior native of Curitiba, Brazil, won 36 of 40 games in the way to No. 1 singles victories over Bethel (Kan.), McPherson (Kan.) and Tabor (Kan.). Alecia spurred the Swedes to a triumph over previously unbeaten McPherson and as well as wins over Bethel and Tabor as No. 14 Bethany ran its record to 19-4 overall.
Alecio and teammate Kane Olsen, ranked as the No. 22 doubles duo in the NAIA by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, dominated with 8-1, 8-0 and 8-5 wins on the week.
