KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kourtney Howell of Xavier (La.) has been named the final NAIA Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the 2012 season, the national office announced Wednesday. Howell was selected based on her performances from April 23 – 29 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated group player of the week selections. Howell is the first from the Gold Nugget program to win the award since it began last season.

Howell, ranked as the 27th best singles player in the NAIA by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, powered Xavier to an unaffiliated group tournament championship and an automatic bid to the National Championships. The sophomore from Cypress, Texas, notched straight-sets wins in each of her No. 1 singles victories against foes from Bethel (Tenn.), Milligan (Tenn.) and then-No. 17 Martin Methodist (Tenn.) in the tournament held April 27 – 28. She highlighted her week with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Paloma Cortina, the ITA’s 47th-rated singles player, as the Gold Nuggets upset Martin Methodist in the championship match.

Howell also teamed with Nicole DeLoach for a 3-0 week at No. 2 doubles, posting wins over duos from Bethel, Milligan and Martin Methodist. On the season, Howell is 17-15 in singles and 14-17 in doubles.
