Players of the Week - No. 5

October 04, 2011
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Jackie Acevedo of Southern Nazarene (Okla.) has garnered NAIA National Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and Point Loma Nazarene's (Calif.) Erica Wessels has been selected as NAIA National Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Acevedo and Wessels were selected based on their performances from Sept. 26 - Oct. 2 and were chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Acevedo scored four of the first five goals and assisted on two others in Southern Nazarene's 11-0 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Sept. 29. The senior forward assisted on the first and then netted the final three goals in a 4-0 blanking of Oklahoma Christian on Oct. 1. For the week, she averaged 3.5 goals per game, 1.5 assists and 8.5 points.

Hailing from Austin, Texas, Acevedo is one of the nation's offensive elitists. She ranks among the top 10 in nine statistical categories, four of which she is first: total goals (24), goals per game (2.67), total points (56) and points per game (6.22). Acevedo is listed third in game winning goals with four and averages .44 a game. She is fifth in assists per game (.89) and total assists (8), seventh in shots on goal per game (3.78) and is 18th in shots per game (5.44).

Wessels anchored the Point Loma Nazarene defense, limiting top-ranked Azusa Pacific (Calif.) to just one shot on goal en route to a 1-0 upset. The senior defender from San Diego, Calif., helped guide the Sea Lions to their first-ever win over the Cougars in 15 previous tries. With the win, 10th-ranked Point Loma Nazarene moved to 9-0-1, 1-0 Golden State Athletic Conference.

The next Players of the Week announcement will be on Oct. 11.
