KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Robbie Haynie of Eastern Oregon has been honored as the NAIA National Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of The Week and B.J. Lawrence of Doane (Neb.) has been named the NAIA National Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of The Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Haynie and Lawrence were selected based on their performances from April 2 - 8.
Haynie, a senior from Nampa, Idaho, finished with a school-record 7,112 points and first-place finish in the decathlon at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Multi-Championships from April 5 - 6. He became just the second conference athlete to total 7,000 points in the decathlon. The meet record is held by Southern Oregon's Ross Kennedy, who totaled 7,355 points in 1997. Haynie now has the top mark in the NAIA, passing the former best of 6,715 held by Westmont's (Calif.) Andy Thompkins.
Lawrence, a junior from Omaha, Neb., recorded three NAIA automatic qualifying marks at the Doane/Nebraksa Wesleyan University Duals on April 6. In both the 100-meter and 200-meters, he took top medalist honors and now is No. 1 on the season NAIA charts in both of those events. He was also part of a 4x100-meter relay team to clock a 41.25.
