KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Floyd Battle of St. Thomas (Fla.) has been named the NAIA National Division II Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Battle was selected based on his performances from Jan. 13-19 and was chosen out of a pool of conference and independent award winners.
Battle, a native of Maywood, Ill., led St. Thomas to a 2-0 week, including a 67-63 road win over No. 1 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) on Jan. 18. In the upset, Battle led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting—including a 4-for-6 mark from beyond the arc. Battle also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while adding three assists and three steals in 38 minutes of action. On Jan. 15, Battle also led all Bobcats with 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and seven steals in the team’s 97-89 win over Warner (Fla.). For the week, Battle shot 58 percent (18-31) from the field and 50 percent (7-14) from 3-point territory. He averaged 23.5 points, eight rebounds, 3.5 assists and five steals per game.
On the season, Battle leads St. Thomas in points per game (17.33) and 3-point field goals made (24). He also ranks second on the team in assists (38) and steals (32), despite having played in just 12 of the Bobcats’ 17 games thus far.
