KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Phillip Miller of Wiley (Texas) has been named the NAIA National Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Miller was selected based on his performances from Jan. 6 – 12 and was chosen out of a pool of conference and independent award winners.
Miller, a Dallas, Texas, native, shot 63.2 percent (24-of-3) from the field and 91.7 percent (11-of-12) at the free throw line en route to a 35.5 points per game average in two victories last week. In a 105-70 win against NCAA Division III Rust (Miss.) on Jan. 8, Miller tallied a career-best 37 points on 12-of-14 shooting, including a 7-for-9 effort from 3-point range. The 6-foot senior guard’s encore came three days later against Red River Athletic Conference rival Texas College when he poured in a game-high 34 points to lead Wiley to an 89-73 victory.
On the year, Miller leads the team and ranks fifth nationally in points per game (22.7), while also ranking among the top 10 in free throw percentage (87.4 percent). He has scored in double-digits in 12-of-13 games this season for the Wildcats.
