Freed vs The Master's

Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) Gets Past The Master's (Calif.) with Fourth Quarter Rally

BILLINGS, Mont. – [BOX SCORE] A two-woman show prevailed over the entire game between one-seed Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) and eight-seed The Master’s College (Calif.). FHU’s guard Sandrea Sylman and forward Kim Mallory combined to score 52 points for the Lions in a 71-51 win over the Mustangs in the first round of the 2018 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships.

Both players were good throughout, but for most of the contest, TMU’s Sabrina Thompson was able to keep the Mustang’s in the hunt. With 9:35 left in the game, The Master’s only trailed 49-46 but then a lid went on the basket.

For the next six minutes, Freed-Hardeman was the only team to score, and they scored a lot. When TMU finally made another shot with 3:05 on the clock, the game was essentially over with the score at 64-49. Freed-Hardeman carried that momentum through the final three minutes, continuing to extend the lead until the final horn sounded.

Sylman and Mallory were forces the Mustangs simply couldn’t handle. Mallory’s athleticism and tenacity in the paint led to a season-high 30 points and her eighth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. She shot 11-22 from the field and added 3 steals, 1 assists, and 1 block while playing the full 40 minutes.

While she dominated the paint, Sylman was all over the backcourt. She scored 22 points on 8-18 shooting and also played a full 40 minutes.

TMU’s Thompson finished with 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals but it wasn’t enough.

Freed-Hardeman makes it past the first round for the fifth straight season. The program is making its 22nd national appearance but is still searching for its first national title, finishing third five times, and taking second place once.

They will continue the quest for a title against the winner of four-seed Science & Arts (Okla.) and five-seed Rocky Mountain College on Friday, March 26 at 12:30 p.m.
