KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Janelle Redhead of Wayland Baptist (Texas) has been named the NAIA National Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week and Milika Tuivanuavou of Fresno Pacific (Calif.) has been tabbed as the NAIA National Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, the national office announced on Wednesday. Redhead and Tuivanuavou were selected based on their performances from Jan. 30 – Feb. 5.

In her second competition of the season, Redhead, a junior from Toronto, Ontario, beat out NJCAA South Plains (Texas) runners Sparkle McKnight and Janeil Bellille with a season-best time of 54.09 to take her first title of the season in the women’s 400-meter dash at the Texas Tech Indoor Open on Feb. 4. The result bettered her previous best of 54.76 set on Jan. 13 at Texas Tech. Her time, which converts to 54.60 on the NAIA qualifying list, is now the nation’s best mark on the year.

Tuivanuavou, a senior from Suva, Fiji, put together a rare combination, claiming individual titles in the women’s triple jump and shot put over the weekend at the Westmont Sunshine Open on Feb. 4. Her triple jump mark of 38-0 ¼ (11.59m) bettered teammate and second-place finisher Rachel Eng’s leap by more than three feet. Tuivanuavou’s performance ranks second in the NAIA, trailing only Tamala Daley of Shorter (Ga.), who posted a mark of 38-8 ¾ at the Birmingham Ice Breaker Multi’s and Invitational on Dec. 7. In the shot put, Tuivanuavou recorded a throw of 41-1 (13.74m) en route to her first shot put championship since the NAIA Indoor Championships last season. She currently ranks third behind Kayla Xavier of Concordia (Ore.) and Mandy Streu of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in the event.
