KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Akela Jones of Oklahoma Baptist has been named NAIA National Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week and Katrina Nolan of Oklahoma City has been tabbed as the National Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Jones and Nolan were selected based on their performances from April 8 – 14.
Jones, a freshman from Michael, Barbados, finished second in both the high jump and long jump at the Wichita State (Kan.) KT Woodman Classic on April 13. Jones had an NAIA-best high jump of 1.73 meters (5-8) and finished .03 meters off the winner from NCAA Division II Central Oklahoma. In the long jump, Jones leaped 6.13 meters (20-1 ½) for a second-place finish. Her long jump mark is tied for the best in the NAIA.
Nolan, a freshman from Wasaga Beach, Ontario, finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Wichita State KT Woodman Classic. Nolan broke Oklahoma City’s school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by finishing the event in a time of 10:56.21. Her time is the second fastest in the country this year and was an A standard qualifying mark.
