KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Derek Semenas of Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) has been named the NAIA National Division II Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Semenas was selected based on his performance from Jan. 6-12 and was chosen out of a pool of conference and independent award winners.
Semenas, a native of Rosendale, Wis., led Cardinal Stritch to a 2-0 week, with both victories coming on the road. In the Wolves 109-70 win over Judson (Ill.) on Jan. 8, Semenas recorded 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting in 21 minutes of action. But his truly spectacular performance came in the Wolves 98-83 victory over Purdue North Central (Ind.) on Jan. 10. In that contest, Semanas broke a 32-year-old Cardinal Stritch individual-game record for points scored. He tallied 47 points, besting Mike Murphy’s 41-point performance against Wisconsin Lutheran from 1982. For the week, Semenas shot 65 percent (24-37) from the field, 56 percent (5-9) from beyond the arc and 94 (17-18) percent from the free throw line. He averaged 35 points, 7.5 rebounds and three assists per game.
On the season, Semenas ranks ninth nationally in points per game (23.77) and 11th in total scoring (404 points). He also leads the Wolves in both categories, while ranking second on the team in rebounds (90), assists (60) and steals (22).
