NAIA 2014 Indoor Women's Track & Field Athletes of the Week - No. 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Akela Jones of Oklahoma Baptist has been named the NAIA National Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week and Brianna Woods of Indiana Tech has been selected as the NAIA National Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Jones and Woods were selected based on their performances from Feb. 17 – 23. This is the final award of the 2014 indoor season.

Jones is recognized with her third national weekly award of 2014, with mentions on Jan. 22 and Feb. 5. The sophomore from St. Michael, Barbados, recorded the top height in the NAIA in the high jump this season, breaking her own personal best and previous NAIA high. Her leap of 1.87 meters at the NCAA Division I University of Nebraska Tune-Up on Feb. 21 defeated the other 14 athletes. She also holds the Barbados indoor high jump record. In the track category, Jones established the fastest time in the NAIA for the 60-meter hurdles (8.30) in the same meet.

Woods, a freshman from Huber Heights, Ohio, had an impressive Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Championships debut as she was named WHAC Newcomer of the Year and took home outstanding women's performer honors on Feb. 22. Woods won the 200 meters in a WHAC-record time of 24.41, which is currently tops in the NAIA. As part of the medal-winning 4x400-meter relay team, Woods and her teammates finished in an automatic qualifying time (3:55.42), which is fifth best in the NAIA. Also, Woods ended the 60-meters (7.52) with a second-place finish and auto qualifying mark.
