KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Antonio Manuel Marcelo of Cumberland (Tenn.) has been named the NAIA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Marcelo was selected based on his performances from March 17 – 23 and was chosen out of a pool of conference, independent and unaffiliated group award winners.
Marcelo, a junior from Cascais, Portugal, knocked off a pair of ranked individuals in singles, while winning at No. 1 doubles with partner Diogo Soares against a 12th-ranked tandem from No. 7 Xavier (Ill.), 8-2. The first of his two wins at No. 1 singles came against No. 9 Birkir Gunnarson of No. 13 Graceland (Iowa), 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Four days later, Marcelo defeated No. 17 Kyle Montrel of Xavier in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
On the season, Marcelo owns a 5-2 singles record and a 3-4 doubles mark.
