In 2017, John Leavens was named Executive Vice President of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. He is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the association.
John joined the NAIA in 2004 as senior vice president. His responsibilities included NAIA public relations, championships, legislative services, Champions of Character community outreach programming, and strategic planning.
In 2010 John was promoted to executive vice president and executive director of the NAIA Eligibility Center was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the NAIA Eligibility Center and legislative services and work closely with governing and administrative councils, committees and NAIA National Office staff to provide leadership and oversight.
Before joining the NAIA, John served as executive director of the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance, a coalition of major U.S. sports organizations focused on character in sport. He previously was employed by the NCAA for 17 years, where he served as vice president.
John is a graduate of Duke University, where he was a four-year letter winner in men’s soccer and captained the team his senior year, and received a master’s degree in Sports Management from Ohio State University.
