KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Seahawks of Northwood (Fla.) strengthen their grip on the No. 1 position in the 2014-15 NAIA Women’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll by taking home 10 first-place votes and 461 total points, the national office announce Friday. The top-spot is the fourth-straight earned by the Seahawks, who were named the top-team for the first time in school history back in the Preseason Top 25 on Nov. 7, 2014.
Northwood is most recently coming off of a tie for second in the Battle at Primm in Las Vegas, Nev., on March 24. Before that, the Seahawks claimed second in the Embry-Riddle Eagle Invitational at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. – home of the 64th Annual NAIA Men's Golf National Championships.
The Seahawks have been led by freshman Elsa Westin, who has notched three victories on the year after running away from the field in the Battle at Primm with rounds of 66 and 71 on the 5,938-yard, par-72 course. Her performance earned her NAIA Women’s Golfer of the Week honors.
Up next for the top-squad is the Embry-Riddle Bash at the Beach tomorrow.
Remaining at No. 2 is SCAD Savannah (Ga.) with six first-place votes and 455 points. The Bees have now been in the second spot for two-consecutive releases after falling to No. 3 on March 13 for the first time since 2013 Postseason Top 25 (May 31, 2013).
Spots three and four remain the same from a week ago. No. 3 British Columbia (438 points and the final four first-place votes) is followed by No. 4 Oklahoma City (419 points). Jumping up one spot to fifth is William Woods (Mo.) with 407 total points.
Minimal movement took place within the rating, as No. 6 USC Beaufort (S.C.), jumped up two slots from No. 8, the best positive change of any school. No. 8 Houston-Victoria (Texas) fell from No. 5.
No new team entered the Top 25 poll this week.
The Sun Conference – Northwood, SCAD Savannah, USC Beaufort, No. 15 Embry-Riddle (Fla.), No. 17 (tie) Thomas (Ga.) and No. 22 Southeastern (Fla.) – lead all conferences, while Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) and unaffiliated groupings earned five teams among the Top 25. The A.I.I. and Sooner Athletic Conference each landed a foursome of ranked teams in the poll.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, A.I.I. and unaffiliated groups. For the entire 2014-15 Coaches’ Top 25 Poll schedule, click here. The final Top 25 will be announced April 30.
