KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After the Seahawks of Northwood (Fla.) claimed their second national championship in team history at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Ga., on May 15, the newly-crowned champions tightened their grip on No. 1 in the Women’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Friday. The Seahawks received all 17 first-place votes and 467 points.
With today’s ranking, Northwood has now been atop the poll for six-consecutive releases.
After entering the final round tied for first-place, Northwood (Fla.) shot just the second sub-300 round of the 2015 NAIA Women’s Golf National Championships to claim its second national title (2003) in the 21-year history of the event.
The Seahawks carded an 8-over par 296 in the final round to win the national crown by 22 strokes at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Ga. Northwood was 59-over par as a team (1211, 308-301-306-296) for the championship, which is tied for the third-best 72-hole total in NAIA history—behind last year’s 1209 by Oklahoma City and SCAD Savannah (Ga.).
Elsa Westin led the way for the Seahawks, shooting 9-over par 297 (76-75-74-72) to be named the championship runner-up.
Fourth-ranked Dalton State (Ga.) made the biggest leap of any school within the poll, jumping from No. 13 in the final regular-season edition on April 30. The jump in rating for the Roadrunners comes off the heels of their tie for second at the national championships with William Woods (Mo.) and SCAD Savannah (Ga.) (1233).
Conversely, No. 11 British Columbia and No. 14 Houston-Victoria (Texas) both plummeted seven spots apiece, the most of any ranked squad. No new program joined the Top 25 this week.
The Sun Conference – Northwood, No. 2 SCAD Savannah, No. 9 USC Beaufort (S.C.), No. 19 Thomas (Ga.), No. 20 Embry-Riddle (Fla.), and No. 25 Southeastern (Fla.) – leads all leagues with six schools represented.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, A.I.I. and unaffiliated groups. For the entire 2014-15 Coaches’ Top 25 Poll schedule, click here. The postseason Top 25 will be announced May 22.
