KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Eric Thompson of Grand View (Iowa) has been named the NAIA National Wrestler of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Thompson was selected based on his performances from Jan. 30 – Feb. 5.
This is the second consecutive NAIA weekly award for Thompson, who also earned the recognition on Feb. 1. He joins Midland’s (Neb.) Kody Kersten as multiple award winners this season.
Thompson, currently the nation’s top wrestler in the heavyweight division, cruised through the Briar Cliff open with four victories on four pins. His longest match, which only lasted one minute and 30 seconds, came in the second round against Nathan Craig of William Penn (Iowa). Thompson claimed the individual championship at the event with a victory against Joe Kent of Missouri Baptist.
The next Wrestler of the Week announcement will be made on Feb. 15.
