2013 NAIA Menís Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week - No. 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Willy Irwin of Concordia (Ore.) has been named NAIA National Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week and Monte Larsen of Morningside (Iowa) has been tabbed as the NAIA National Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Irwin and Larsen were selected based on their performances from April 8 – 14.

Irwin, a junior from Clovis, Calif., claimed his fourth field athlete of the week this season after winning the shot put and finishing second in the discus at the John Knight Twilight hosted by NCAA Division II Western Oregon. For the second-straight week, Irwin recorded a stadium record in the shot put. He tossed the shot put 19.05 meters (62-6) to win the shot put event. Irwin added a season-best in the discus with a throw of 57.46 meters (188-8) eo earn second place. That distance is the second-best mark in the NAIA this season.

Larsen, a senior from Sioux City, Iowa, finished first in the 800-meter run, sprint relay, 1,600-meter relay, 3,200-meter relay and second in the 400-meter hurdles at the Sioux City Relays on April 13. Larsen clocked a time of 1:52.02 in the 800-meter, the fourth fastest time in the NAIA this season. Larsen anchored the Mustangs to victories in each of the three relays. In the 400-meter hurdles, Larsen finished second with a time of 52.53. Larsen was named Sioux City Relays most valuable player for the Men’s Collegiate division.
