NAIA Football Players of the Week No. 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Martin Waddick of Marian (Ind.), Brandon Wegher of Morningside (Iowa) and Justin Wohlert of Northwestern (Iowa) have been named the NAIA Football National Players of the Week, the national office announced Monday. The trio was chosen for their performances during the week of Oct. 13 – 19 and were selected out of a pool of conference and independent award winners.

National Special Teams Player of the Week
Martin Waddick, Marian (Ind.)
Sr., K, Indianapolis, Ind.

• Senior helped lead then-No. 21 Marian (Ind.) to a 37-14 win over then-No. 6 William Penn (Iowa) last Saturday. The win is the program’s second victory against a top-10 opponent this season.
• Converted a season-long 43-yard field goal to give Marian a 10-0 first quarter lead.
• Also connected on field goal attempts of 26 and 22 yards.
• Finished the game 3-for-3 on field goal attempts and 4-for-4 on PATs.
• First career National Special Teams Player of the Week award.
• Last player from Marian to earn National Player of the Week honors: Eric Price (defensive) (Sept. 22, 2014).

National Offensive Player of the Week
Brandon Wegher, Morningside (Iowa)
Jr., RB, Dakota Dunes, S.D.

• Set a Morningside single-game record with 327 yards rushing in a 50-7 win against then-No. 16 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Oct. 18.
• Helped the Mustangs break the team single-game record with 475 yards rushing.
• Scored four touchdowns, raising his season total to 19 rushing touchdowns.
• Performance vaults Wegher to No. 2 on Morningside’s all-time rushing list with 2,351 career yards.
• Leads the NAIA in total rushing (1,146), rushing yards per game (191.0), total scoring (128), scoring per game (21.3) and all-purpose yards per game (220.0).
• First career National Offensive Player of the Week award.
• Second Morningside player to garner National Offensive Player of the Week honors in 2014.
• Last player from Morningside to earn National Player of the Week honors: Ryan Kasdorf (offensive) (Oct. 13, 2014).

National Defensive Player of the Week
Justin Wohlert, Northwestern (Iowa)
Jr., DB, Hartley, Iowa

• Recorded three interceptions in the Red Raiders 27-21 win against Great Plains Athletic Conference rival Concordia (Neb.).
• Also tallied three tackles and two pass break-ups.
• Leads the NAIA with nine interceptions and has the most picks in a season by a Northwestern player in 20 years.
• First career National Defensive Player of the Week award.
• Last player from Northwestern to earn National Player of the Week honors: Theo Bartman (offensive) (Nov. 11, 2013)
