2016 NAIA Baseball Players of the Week No. 7 (May 3)

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Ayrton Costa of Antelope Valley (Calif.) has been named the NAIA National Baseball Pitcher of the Week and Jacob Zanon of Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) has been named the NAIA National Baseball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Costa and Zanon were selected based on their performances from April 25 – May 1 and were chosen from a pool of conference/Association of Independent Institutions award winners. This is the final national award of the 2016 season. 


Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Ayrton Costa, Antelope Valley (Calif.)
6-0, Sr., P, Lake Elsinore, Calif.

• Helped the Antelope Valley Pioneers to a 4-0 win over then-No. 6 Westmont (Calif.) on April 26.
• Blanked the Warriors offense, on three days rest, by allowing just six hits in a complete-game effort.
• Recorded five strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
• Leads the NAIA in total innings pitched (110.2), ranks fifth in innings pitched per game (7.3) and is sixth in wins with 10.
• The win over Westmont was the highest ranked team that the Pioneers have defeated in program history and the California Pacific Conference Champions wrapped up their most successful baseball season ever.
• This is his first career national player of the week award.

Baseball Player of the Week
Jacob Zanon, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)
6-1, Jr., OF, Beaverton, Ore.

• Went 11-for-21 (0.524 batting average) and helped lead the Warriors to a 5-0 week.
• Recorded a slugging percentage of 1.048.
• Five of his 11 hits went for extra bases.
• Logged two doubles, three homeruns, 10 RBI, seven runs scored and added a stolen base.
• Had at least two hits in all five games.
• Leads the NAIA in runs scored per game (1.5) and ranks fourth in total runs scored (72).
• This is his first career national player of the week award.
