Point Lookout, Mo. – All four of the No.1 seeds advanced after the first round of play at the 2017 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship held in Point Lookout, Mo.

Top seeds Union, Indiana Wesleyan, Bethel and Cornerstone all survived, all with various degrees of difficulty. Cornerstone arguably had the biggest scare, coming back from a 25-point, first-half deficit to defeat No.8 Pacific Union (Calif.).

Another trend after the first round of play is the competitiveness of the games, with 11 of the 16 match-ups decided by 10-points or less. Several games were decided in the closing seconds, including a pair of near buzzer beaters. Northwestern College defeated Washington Adventist on a late jumper by Colton Kooima and Eastern Oregon used some last second heroics by Kentrell Washington to get past IU Southeast.

All 16 teams still remaining have been to the second round at least once prior to the 2017 D-II Men’s Basketball National Championship. Cornerstone has the most trips to the second round (13) and three other teams, Bethel, Northwestern and Bellevue, have 12. Trinity International has the longest drought, last reaching the second round in 1996. Tabor (2001) and Taylor (2006) are next on that list.

Friday’s second round will feature eight more games, beginning with No. 1 Cornerstone (Mich.) matching up against No. 4 University of Saint Francis (Ind.). Tip-off at the Keeter Gymnasium scheduled for 8:30am.
