Campbellsville (30-3) controlled the first half as LSU-Shreveport searched for offense. The Lady Pilots went just 1-8 from three-point range in the half and shot just 24 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of Thursday’s contest.
The Lady Tigers looked strong from the outset and not only recorded five steals, but forced 13 LSU-Shreveport turnovers in the first half.
The Lady Pilots kept things close for nearly 12 minutes, but began to trail-off as the Campbellsville offense heated-up. The Lady Tigers went on a 17-4 run in the final five minutes, but LSU-Shreveport’s Kourtney Pennywell posted the last bucket of the half to make it a 30-17 game after 20 minutes of play.
Pennywell entered Thursday’s contest leading the NAIA in double-doubles and was well on her way to another in the first half. The sophomore recorded 13 points and eight rebounds heading into the break.
LSU-Shreveport began to regroup after halftime. The team began the second half on a 10-4 run and eventually cut the deficit to four at 37-33 with 13:17 remaining. They kept pace with the Lady Tigers through the midway point of the half, but the top seed eventually pulled away.
Campbellsville extended its five point, 45-40 lead, to 10 in the matter of just over a minute and rolled to its 30th victory of the season.
Lindsey Burd led the Lady Tigers in the game. The 5’10” junior recorded 13 points and nine boards. Emily Fox matched Burd’s point total in the game and rounded-out the scorers in double-digits for Campbellsville.
Kourtney Pennywell did what she does best and notched her 26th double-double on the year. The local product from Shreveport, La., finished the game with 22 points and 17 rebounds.
With the win, The Lady Tigers will face the winner of No. 4-seed MidAmerica Nazarene (Mo.) and No. 5-seed Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at the Independence Event Center.
Campbellsville has now won its first round game at the National Championship for the third consecutive season. The last time the Lady Tigers incurred a loss in the first round was in 2012 in a 75-57 loss to Saint Xavier (Ill.)… The Lady Tigers have not suffered back-to-back losses this season… Lindsey Burd’s 13-point performance was her 14th double-digit point game of the season. She has now posted double figures in her last two games… LSU-Shreveport’s 25 turnovers tied for the second largest turnover total the team recorded in a game this season… Campbellsville is now just the third team in the NAIA this season to reach the 30-win mark
