SIOUX CITY, Iowa – (Box Score) In the third game of the 2015 Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship, presented by State Farm, fans inside the Tyson Events Center saw a balanced Briar Cliff (Iowa) offense steadily force its will on Menlo (Calif.), 80-61, Wednesday in Sioux City.
The Chargers (24-9) out of the Great Plains Athletic Conference had four players hit double-digits scoring in the contest, led by both Jessi Corrick and Slone Masters with 14 points apiece. Corrick also pulled down 10 rebounds for the only double-double in the contest.
Kaylee Blake added 13 while teammate Julie Targy rounded out the foursome of Briar Cliff athletes to hit double-figures with 12.
With the win, the Chargers up their national championship opening round record to a perfect 12-0.
Head coach Shannon Osborne’s Oaks did the best they could to keep the game close, but could not recover from 10-point halftime deficit of 42-32.
Points in the paint played a major factor in the outcome of the game as the Oaks seemed to be outmatched down low, being outscored 42-26. The squad entered Wednesday’s tilt allowing only 59.3 points per game, but were unable to stop a machine-like offensive effort from Briar Cliff.
On the offensive end for Menlo, Vanessa D’Amico led the way with 14 points. Jacki Bateman joined in on the 10-or-more scoring by netting 11 points and grabbing six rebounds.
With the defeat, the Oaks wrap up the season at 22-6.
The Chargers now shift their focus to a matchup with either Davenport (Mich.) or Clarke (Iowa) on Friday at 10:15 a.m. CDT.
