ST. LOUIS, Mo. – (BOX SCORE) No. 5 Ottawa (Kan.) and No. 8 Missouri Valley opened up the 2017 NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Invitational and produced a gem, as No. 8 Mo Val upset the Braves in four sets (25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23).
This marks the first appearance for the Vikings since the 2007 season and they improve to 18-12 on the season, while Ottawa ends its season with a record of 25-7, this marked the Braves’ first-ever appearance at the National Invitational.
The Vikings hit .185 on the day and were led by two double-digit kill suppliers, as Ivailo Enev had 11 kills and Casey Wood led the way with 16 kills.
Ottawa hit .165 in the match and 2017 AMC/GPAC/KCAC First Team All-Conference award winner Daniel Jacobs led all players with 28 kills and hit .333.
Luke Pope had 44 of Ottawa’s 46 assists and Errol Basconcillo led with 18 digs.
Missouri Valley’s setter Andrea Maggio also had 44 assists and Skyler Capplonch led the team in digs with 18.
Ottawa finished with 14 service errors and the Vikings featured multiple looks with three blockers and finished with 17 total team blocks.
The Vikings will now move into Pool B and will play two-time defending National Champion No. 2 Missouri Baptist on Thursday, April 20 at 10 a.m.
