LEWISTON, Idaho - No. 6 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University (43-17) scored eight of the game's final 10 runs and out-lasted No. 10 Jamestown (N.D.) College (32-20), 10-5 this afternoon from the AVISTA-NAIA World Series at Harris Field. Trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning, the Eagles took the lead for good putting four up on the board in the sixth.
The Jimmies of Jamestown are eliminated with the loss and fall to 0-4 all-time in World Series action. Winners of the Plains Super Regional, JC ends its year at 32-20.
Each team scored a pair of runs with Jamestown lighting the board in the second. ERAU notched the count at 2-2 in the fourth on a couple of RBI singles.
Jamestown's Ben Cairns broke the tie with a right-center drive that handed the Jimmies a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. It was his ninth homer of the year for the junior from British Columbia, Canada. Embry-Riddle once again tied the score after Aaron Tea came home on an RBI-single by Colin Gray.
ERAU cashed in on an opportunity to the take the lead in the sixth inning putting runners on the corner with two outs. Jamestown reliever Alex Kreis came in for starter Greg Hockin. Kreis did not fare well allowing two runs on a hit, and gave up a hits batsman and a walk. Before he left, the Eagles grabbed a 5-3 lead. They would add two more in the sixth and at that point held a 7-3 edge.
In the eighth, Jamestown's Jeremy Burgard hit his team-leading 11th tator of the year, a two-run blast that cleared the left-field stands. At that point, Jamestown drew to within 7-5. However, the Region XIV champions from Florida tacked on three more to erase any doubt of a Jimmie comeback.
Chris Maloney improved to 8-4 overall on the hill twirling 8.0 innings for Embry-Riddle. He gave up five runs, all earned, on six hits. He recorded six strikeouts and allowed two walks. Hockin took the loss in 5.2 innings of work. He allowed five runs (earned) on nine hits and struck out four.
Gray led the Embry-Riddle hit attack with a 3-for-4 effort with three runs batted in. Ogden, AJ Tea and Kyle Albright each had two hits apiece. Burgard was Jamestown's top hitter going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Embry-Riddle, who moves to 8-3 overall when scoring 10 or more runs in the World Series, takes on the loser between No. 1 Lee (Tenn.) and No. 8 Bellevue (Neb.) on Monday, May 26 at 12 p.m. PST.
