Lubbock Christian pounds its way past Oklahoma City 14-4

LEWISTON, Idaho – (box score) Armando Dominguez had three hits and drove in three runs to pace a 16-hit attack as Lubbock Christian University (Texas) dumped fellow Sooner Athletic Conference member Oklahoma City University 14-4 in loser-out play at the 53rd annual Avista-NAIA World Series on Wednesday (May 27) at Harris Field.
Lubbock Christian came out swinging and sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning to produce five runs and never looked back.
The win means Lubbock Christian (50-8) can finish no worse than third in the Series and will meet Point Loma Nazarene on Thursday at 7 p.m. Point Loma plays Lee later on Wednesday and a Point Loma win would mean LCU would be playing in the championship game of the 10-team double-elimination tournament.
OCU, which trailed 7-0 in the second and 12-2 in the sixth, lost to the Chaps for the third time in four games this season. The Stars (53-9) never could get untracked offensively, and their pitching staff and defense allowed 26 baserunners in the game.
The 10-run loss was the biggest ever for OCU in a Series game and the 14 runs are also the most the Stars have allowed.
In LCU’s five-run first, Will Stramp had a solo homer, his 25th of the season, while Dan Neumann had an RBI double. Dominguez finished the scoring with a two-run double. A two-run single by Rob Learned in the second inning made it 7-0.
OCU broke on the board in the second with a pair of unearned runs when right-fielder Tanner Rindels dropped a routine fly ball.
LCU’s offense, however, didn’t let up. The Chaps added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Rindels and used a solo home run by Tyler Johnson for a 9-2 lead in the fourth.
The Chaps added three more in the sixth, including one an on RBI single from Dominguez.
OCU picked up two runs in the eighth on a base-loaded walk and a fielder’s choice, while LCU’s Ross Blondin hit a two-run home run in the ninth for his 24th home run of the season.
Stramp finished with three hits for LCU, while Rindels, Blondin, Neumann, and Learned all had two RBI.
Kirk Walker went 3-for-5 with two RBI for OCU, while Landon Camp added two hits.
