2019 NAIA Football Game of the Week No. 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced that the NAIA Football Game of the Week for October 19 will be No. 15 Langston (Okla.) at No. 17 Ottawa (Ariz). The game was selected by fans across the country in an online vote.

It has been called by some as the game of the year in the Sooner Athletic Conference as Ottawa and Langston will face-off for the second time in history. While the Lions are no strangers to the NAIA Football Top 25, the Spirit are getting their first taste of it this season. Both teams have been ranked in the Top 25 in every regular season poll in 2019.

While the Spirit boast the better record heading into Saturday night’s clash, the Lions have won 24-consecutive conference games dating back to the 2016 season.

Langston has shown that one of its biggest strengths is on the defensive side of the ball. The Lions are ranked No. 3 in the nation in opponent first downs this season, allowing only 71 through five games (14.2 1st downs per game). Further, they are ranked No. 6 in rushing defense per game (78.2 yards per game).

Langston also has one of the top running backs in the NAIA in 2019. Tim Whitfield ranks in the top 10 in six offensive statistical categories including fourth in rushing yards per game (146.6).

Ottawa is a relatively new NAIA Football program in its second season of competition, and what a two years it has been. The team finished with a 7-4 record in its rookie campaign with its first win over a ranked opponent in a 73-28 win over No. 19 Arizona Christian on Oct. 6, 2018.

The Spirit boast the top pass offense and scoring offense in the nation in 2019 led by quarterback Austin McCullough. Not yet a household name throughout the NAIA, but the 6’2” junior from Ridgecrest, Calif., is quickly turning heads and will have a national spotlight on Saturday under the lights. Heading into the weekend, McCullough is averaging just north of 316 passing yards per game and has 23 touchdowns to his credit.
