Second Half Boosts College of Idaho Into Quarterfinals

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – (Box Score) –No. 4 College of Idaho used a big second half to pull away and defeat Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) 99-80 in the second round of the 2015 NAIA Men's NAIA Division II Basketball National Championship. This year’s event is being played at the Keeter Gymnasium in Point Lookout, Mo.

College of Idaho put up 60 points in the second half and a had a big night at the foul line, setting a new school record by making 39-of-41 free throw attempts (95%). The 39 made free throws matches the third most made in a game at the Division II Championship (William Penn vs Dordt, 2014).

Demetrius Perkins scored 23 of his career-high 32 points in the second half, making 16-of-17 free throw attempts, both ranking among the championships top five in makes and attempts for a single game. The senior is just one point shy of scoring 1,000 for his career.

Leading 39-35 at the half, the Yotes’ began the second half on an 11-3 run to push the lead to double digits, where it stayed for the duration of the final period. They helped clinch the win by making their final 22 free throw attempts.

College of Idaho shot 51% for the game, 38% from beyond the arc. Marko Kovacevic netted 17 points and Sydney Donaldson had a 15-point effort. The Yotes controlled the boards, 34-24, led by Kovcevic with eight.

The opening half was very tight and featured six ties and 11 lead changes before an 8-0 run put College of Idaho up for good, 29-23 with just over four minutes left in the half.

Cardinal Stritch shot 44% for the game, led by senior guard Tony Smit with a 30-point, eight rebound and four assist effort. Tyler Semanas scored 19 and Garrett Borgrud netted 13 coming off the Wolves’ bench. Cardinal Stritch bows out with a 25-10 record.

College of Idaho advances to the quarterfinals for the seventh time overall and first since 2001. The Yotes are now 30-5 on the year and will play No. 5 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Saturday at 5pm.
