Cal Maritime Pulls Off First Upset of the Day

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – (Box Score | Bracket) In the first game of the afternoon session, No. 7-seeded Cal Maritime (23-9) pulled off the first upset of the day, by defeating No. 2-seeded Union (Ky.) (28-7), 81-70.
Both teams traded blows for much of the first half. Union used a 14-4 run to extend its lead to 25-13.
The Keelhaulers battled back to tie the game at 37 apiece. Union’s Gerrard Newby made a 2-point field goal with one second left in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 39-37 advantage heading into the break.
The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Sam Natt and Levon Harper with nine points apiece. Union shot 40 percent (14-of-35) from the field and 4-of-11 (36 percent) from beyond the 3-point line.
Zach Davis led the Keelhaulers with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Cal Maritime shot 45 percent
(14-of-31) from the field and 28 percent (2-of-7) from distance.
In the second half, Cal Maritime took its first lead on a 3-point field goal by Daniel Radford with 13:21 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs would answer immediately on two free throws by Nick Riley.
The Keelhaulers would regain the lead for good at the 12:14 mark on a 3-point bucket by Hunter Johnson.
Union would get the lead down to two, but was unable to overcome the outside shooting of the Keelhaulers.
For the game Zach Davis led all scorers with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Davis was joined in double figures by teammates Daniel Radford with 18 points (7-of-12 from the field; 4-of-5 from 3-point arc) and Roman Delgado and Kameron Hoyt with 11 points apiece.
Nick Riley led the Bulldogs with 18 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Levon Harper and Sean Brown added 12 points apiece and Sam Natt added 10 points.
Union shot 23-of-63 (36 percent) for the game from the field and 23 percent (5-of-21) from the 3-point arc.
Cal Maritime shot 48 percent (30-of-67) from the field and 44 percent (8-of-18) from distance.
The Keelhaulers advance to Friday’s semifinals at 7:30 p.m.
