Bergh Shoots Dakota Wesleyan to Second Round

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – In the second to last game of the first round, No. 5-seed Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) (23-10) def. Indiana Tech (23-10), 93-89 in OT, to advance to the second round.
After the two teams traded buckets for the first four minutes, Trae Bergh drilled three-straight 3-pointers to give Dakota Wesleyan the early 20-8 lead.
Bergh finished the first half with 18 points including a trio of 3-point field goals.
The Tigers used a 10-4 spurt to take a 15-point lead with 8:53 left in the first half.
Responding quickly, the Warriors used a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to eight.
Tanner Watkins led the Warriors with 17 first half points including 3-of-4 from downtown.
The two teams would continue to trade buckets, with Dakota Wesleyan taking a 39-34 lead into the break.
The second half started the way the first half finished. Back-and-forth action. Dakota Wesleyan took an eight-point lead at the 15:41 mark after a Bergh free throw.
The Warriors would answer right back with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to three. The two teams
continued to go after each other. With the Tigers up 55-58, Bergh hit a deep three to increase the lead to six with fewer than seven minutes to play.
The Warriors cut the lead down to two, but a Tate Martin three pushed the lead back to five.
Indiana Tech used a quick 4-0 run to cut the lead to 67-69 with 5:07 left in the game. Bergh would end the run with his fifth three of the game to push the lead back to five with 4:08 to play.
The Warriors were able to get a game-tying dunk by Dominique Walls with 5 seconds left. The Tigers had a shot at the buzzer that went wide.
In overtime, Trae Bergh hit his sixth three of the game from 29 feet away to give the Tigers a four point advantage. Dakota Wesleyan went on to win the game 93-89.
Bergh led all scorers with 40 points (6-of-11 from three) which marks the highest individual total in the first round so far this season. Bergh also added 10 rebounds in the contest.
The Tigers shot 43 percent (29-of-66) and 37 percent (9-of-24) from behind the 3-point arc.
Tate Martin (17 points), Terrell Newton (14 points) and Jade Miller (14 points) join Bergh in double figure scoring for the Tigers.
The Warriors were led in scoring by Miles Robinson who scored 23 points. Tanner Watkins scored 21 points, Tyrece Edwards added 12 points and Dominique Walls tallied 11 points.
As a team the Warriors shot 48 percent (36-of-75) from the field and 34 percent (8-of-23 from distance.
Dakota Wesleyan advances to the second round and will meet the winner of the No. 1-seed St. Francis (Ill.) vs. No. 8-seed York (Neb.) game.
