Cinderella Moves On As York Advances To Quarterfinals

Point Lookout, Mo.Box Score | Bracket   In another of the fantastic finishes at the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Championship, the Cinderella team of 2016, No. 8 York College (Neb.), held on to defeat No. 5 Dakota Wesleyan, 78-77.

York moves on to meet No. 2 Indiana Wesleyan (30-5) in Saturday's quarterfinals at 7pm.

The game was back and forth and featured seven lead changes. York took the lead for good with 7:02 remaining on reserve forward Namaan Karbhari's three-pointer from the deep left baseline. Mike Johnson followed with a three from the right wing at 5:19 to stretch the lead to six, the largest for the Panthers all night.

Championship-tested Dakota Wesleyan was not finished, however, and cut the margin to one with 41 seconds remaining on Trae Bergh's driving layup, a basket that concluded the scoring but certainly not the excitement.

After a Bergh steal, the Tigers called timeout to setup a final shot. Swarming defense by York kept Bergh bottled-up on the left sideline, and, ultimately, Jade Miller's desperation three missed the mark and was ruled not to have beaten the final buzzer.

Bergh, who scored 40 in the Tigers first round win over Indiana Tech, continued his assault on the nets with 16 first half points as the Tigers edged to a 37-33 halftime advantage. Johnny Cooksey and Cameron Coleman each contributed ten points to the York first half cause.

Super-sub Mike Johnson scored all 15 of his points in the second half for the Panthers and his scoring and rebounding were catalysts in the York comeback. Johnson had three of York's four three point goals. Cooksey, a shifty point guard, topped the winners' scoring with 18. Coleman added 16 and a team high eight rebounds.

Bergh, a 2015 All-American, was magnificent again, finishing with 30 points and eight rebounds. Teammate Miller was equally brilliant with 25 points and a game high 15 rebounds. Point guard Tate martin added 10 points. The Tigers made 25 of 28 free throws for the game.

York moves into the Indiana Wesleyan clash with a record of 25-9. Dakota Wesleyan closes the season at 23-11.
