Defense, Balanced Scoring Keys IU Southeast Win
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Box Score)- A 20-0 first half run proved to be the difference as No.4 IU Southeast (Ind.) defeated Stillman (Ala.) 84-66 in a first round match-up at the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship, presented by Cypress Risk Management.
Joe Jackson led all players with 20 points and dished out five assists, one of three IU Southeast players to reach double figures. Jamie Johnson added 16 points to go with five assists and Nick Tinsley drained all three of his three-point attempts en route to a 13-point effort.
Championship newcomer Stillman traded baskets early with the Grenadiers and led by one, 17-16, following a basket by Hilton Roberts at the 11-minute mark. A basket in the paint by Jackson gave IU Southeast the lead for good and ignited a 20-0 decisive run that last over five minutes. The Grenadiers led by 21, 45-24, at the break, using suffocating defense to limit Stillman to 26% shooting.
IU Southeast put the game out of reach with a 13-0 run to start the second half, behind the shooting of Johnson, who knocked down two a pair of three-pointers during the run.
The Grenadiers shot 42%, both from the field and from beyond the arc (10/24), and outrebounded Stillman 56-42.
The Tigers were led by the tandem of Montego Hoskins and Tamarco McDuffie with 17 points each. Rafeal Adams scored 10 and pulled down seven boards. Stillman, the Association of Independent Institutions tournament champion, finishes the season with a 27-5 record.
IU Southeast, now 24-8, advances to play either No.1 Indiana Wesleyan or No.8 Antelope Valley (Caif.) on Friday, March 9 at 4pm.
