Men?s Golf National Championships Round One Recap

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – (Results: Individual | Team) William Woods (Mo.) leads the pack after day one of the 2016 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships held at TPC Deere Run, in Silvis, Ill. The Owls carded a round of even par 284.
The top-ranked Owls had all five players post scores of 74 or better, with Junior Matt Wells and Sophomore Alasdair McDougall tied for the individual lead at 2-under-par 69. The Owls duo are tied atop the individual leaderboard with Chase Jones of Dalton State (Ga.) and Callum McGuigan of Cumberlands (Ky.).
Oklahoma City sits in second place, eight shots off the lead. The Stars shot a 292 (8-over-par) for the round and were led by Matthew Cheung, who carded an even-par 71 performance.
Wayland Baptist (Texas), 10-over-par 294, Cumberlands, 11-over-par 295, and Johnson & Wales (Fla.) and Texas Wesleyan round out the top five.
2015 National Champion Coastal Georgia struggled in round one as the Mariners shot a 26-over-par 311 to finish in 21st place.
In addition to the four atop the individual leaderboard, Vince Drahman of Marian (Ind.), Pedro Velasco of Mount Mercy (Iowa), and Matthew Cheung of Oklahoma City went even par 71 to tie for fifth.
Taylor (Ind.) will get tomorrow’s action under way, teeing off at 7:30 a.m. off hole No. 10. The Trojans are paired with Oklahoma Wesleyan and Northwestern (Iowa).
William Woods, Keiser (Fla.) and Dalton State will start off hole 10 at noon, to begin the afternoon session.
