Players of the Week - No. 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The fourth installment of the 2011 NAIA National Men’s Soccer Players of the Week were announced on Tuesday by the national office: Will Akers of Cal Maritime was named NAIA Defensive Player of the Week and Veit Couturier of Embry-Riddle (Fla.) was named NAIA Offensive Player of the Week. They were selected based on their performances from Sept. 19 - 25 and were chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Akers, a 5-10, senior goalkeeper from Truckee, Calif., guided the Keelhaulers to as many wins in their first week as the last four years combined. In the 3-0 shutout of William Jessup (Calif.) on Sept. 20, Akers stopped 14 shots on goal in 90 minutes of action. In the complete-game 4-2 win at Pacific Union (Calif.) on Sept. 23, he posted four saves. He finished his week with 18 saves in 180 minutes of action. He ranks second in the NAIA in saves per game (9.00).

Couturier, a 6-3 freshman forward from Loerrach, Germany, posted four goals and four assists in two victories last week. He finished with a hat trick and nine points in the 7-0 blanking of NCAA Division II Nova Southeastern (Fla.) on Sept. 20. He added a goal and an assist in the 3-0 victory against Warner (Fla.) on Sept. 24. He ranks in the top-15 in the NAIA in goals (10), assists (7) and points (27).
