Players of the Week - No. 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The sixth installment of the 2011 NAIA National Men’s Soccer Players of the Week were announced on Tuesday by the national office: Paul Islas of Fresno Pacific (Calif.) was named NAIA Offensive Player of the Week and teammate Steven Waite was named NAIA Defensive Player of the Week. They were selected based on their performances from Oct. 3 – 9 and were chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Islas, a 5-7 junior forward from Fresno, Calif., posted a hat trick in Fresno Pacific’s 3-1 upset of No. 5 Azusa Pacific (Calif.) on Oct. 5. The Azusa Pacific defense had gone 407 minutes without allowing a goal until Islas’ first marker in the seventh minute. Islas later added two more goals in the first half and Fresno Pacific recorded its first win over the Cougars since 2005. In the 2-0 win over Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) on Oct. 8, Islas finished with two more goals. Islas has 12 goals and eight assists on the season, including eight goals during the Sunbirds’ current four-game winning streak. He has scored or assisted on a goal in each of the 10 matches this season.

Waite, a 5-11 junior goalkeeper from Clovis, Calif., totaled seven saves in two Fresno Pacific victories last week. Waite held No. 5 Azusa Pacific to one goal on three shots on goal. Three days later, Waite posted his third shutout of the season against Point Loma Nazarene.
