KANSAS CITY, MO. — Oliver Gore of Rocky Mountain (Mont.) has been named the NAIA Men's Soccer National Offensive Player of the Week and Alex Nelson of Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) has been selected as the NAIA Men's Soccer National Defensive Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Gore and Nelson, who are the first weekly award recipients for the 2013 season, were chosen for their performances during the week of Sept. 2 – 8 and were selected out of a pool of conference, independent, and unaffiliated grouping award winners.

Gore, a senior forward from Stafford, England, scored a school-record five goals in the Battlin’ Bears 5-3 win over College of Idaho. Beyond that record-setting performance, Gore added three goals and three assists in victories over NCCAA Trinity Lutheran (Wash.) and Northwest Christian (Ore.) this week. For the season, Gore ranks among the top ten in the NAIA in total goals (1st, 13), total points (1st, 32), total assists (3rd, 6), points per game (3rd, 4.57), shots per game (7th, 6.14) and goals per game (10th, 3.43). Gore was an NAIA Honorable Mention All America selection last season.

Nelson, a sophomore goaltender from Sioux Falls, S.D., recorded two shutouts, including a double-overtime tie with No. 16 Jamestown (N.D.). He recorded 18 saves last week: 13 against Jamestown and five in a 4-0 win over Clarke (Iowa). Nelson has allowed just one goal on the young season—the Tigers have played just three games thus far—and ranks among the NAIA leaders in goals against per game (9th, .32), saves per game (12, 7.67) and total saves (24th, 23).
