2018 NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll - No. 1 (Sept. 4)

By Pete Scantlebury, NAIA National Office Manager of Athletics Communications

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After being named the No. 1-team in the nation in the preseason Top 25 Poll, Wayland-Baptist retains the top spot in the first regular-season NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll of 2018.

The defending national champions are 3-0 on the new year, with a 9-0 goal differential. Wayland-Baptist received 15 of 18 first-place votes and had a total of 496 points.

Top 25 Highlights (historical information dates back to 2000):

  • Baker (Kan.) was the big mover inside the top-10 this week, jumping from No. 10 to No. 2 with a 4-0-0 week. Baker has three wins over teams ranked in the top-15 of the preseason Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
  • Baker received two first-place votes; the final first-place vote went to William Carey, which jumped from No. 5 to No. 3 in the nation.
  • Rocky Mountain College also made a big leap, moving from No. 17 to tenth overall after a 2-1-0 week, which included a big 8-0 win over then fourth-ranked Marymount California. Rocky Mountain has gone 3-0 after a 2-1 OT loss to No. 23-Westmont to begin the season.
  • Bellevue (Neb.) made the biggest jump of the week, going from unranked to No. 16 after starting the season 5-0-1.
  • Notable drops include Georgia Gwinnett (8 to 18), Columbia (Mo.) (7 to 20) and Madonna (Mich.) (15 to 25).
  • Entering the poll for the first time this season were Bellevue (Neb.) and No. 19 Southwestern Christian (Okla.). Southwestern Christian is 3-0-0 early in the season.
  • Dropping out of the rankings this week were UC-Merced (previous ranking of 23) and University of Northwestern Ohio (previous ranking of 25).

Poll Methodology

  • The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, Association of Independent Institutions and Unaffiliated Groups.
  • The Top 25 is determined by a points system based on how each voter ranks the best teams. A team receives 30 points for each first-place vote, 29 for second-place and so on through the list.
  • The highest and lowest ranking for each team (a non-rating is considered a low rating) is removed and the team’s ranking will be recalculated with an additional point added to each team for every ballot (including discounted ballots) that the teams appear on.
  • Teams that receive only one point in the ballot are not considered “receiving votes”
