By Alan Grosbach, Manager of Communications and Sports Information

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2014 NAIA Wrestling All-Americans. Honors were bestowed to the top-eight finishers in each weight class at the 57th annual NAIA Wrestling National Championships that were held March 7 – 8 at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kan.

Headlining the 80 wrestlers that earned the honor are Brock Gutches of Southern Oregon and Eric Thompson of Grand View (Iowa), as both individuals received their third All-America honor after winning a third-straight national championship. Gutches became the first three-time national champion in NAIA history at 174 pounds with a 3-2 win over Jared Miller of Montana State-Northern. He also received the event’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award.

Thompson, a senior 285 pounder, controlled the entire match against Courtney Freeman of Cumberlands (Ky.) en route to a 17-2 technical fall. With the win, Thompson became the first three-time national champion in the heavyweight division since Jeff Thue of Simon Fraser (B.C.) accomplished the feat in 1991, 1992 and 1993.

Gustavo Martinez (141) of Grand View, Cameron Neiss (141) of Montana State-Northern, Jake Williams (149) of Cumberland (Tenn.), Ethan Hinebauch (165) of Montana State-Northern, Chad Lowman (165) of Grand View and Jimmie Schuessler (174) of Grand View also earned their third All-America honor.

National champion Grand View had 11 of its 12 national qualifiers receive All-America honors, followed by Southern Oregon with six. Runner-up Great Falls (Mont.) and Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) placed five grapplers, while Montana State-Northern and Morningside (Iowa) tallied four place-winners.

Overall, 25 individuals earned the honor for the second time.
