Vikings Continue to Play Strong on Both Sides as They Narrowly Defeat The Patriots

COLUMBUS, Ga. - [Bracket | Schedule | Watch] Grand View (Iowa) emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over top-seeded Cumberlands (KY). The game was marked by strong pitching performances and highlight-reel defensive plays from both teams.

Vikings pitcher Madeline Waldorf delivered an impressive performance, securing the win with a complete game shutout. Waldorf allowed only five hits and three walks, while striking out two batters over seven innings. This victory improved Waldorf's season record to 15-3. On the other side, Cumberlands' pitcher, Lindsey Shope, also pitched a full game but was tagged with the loss, bringing her season record to 23-4. Shope conceded seven hits and two runs, both earned, while walking one batter.

The game’s scoring was initiated by GVU in the second inning when Reese Cooley hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Samantha Holbert to score. The following inning, Holbert continued to impact the game by driving in Olivia Harmon with a single to center field, extending Grand View's lead to 2-0. These two runs proved to be sufficient, as Cumberlands' offense struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, leaving eight runners on base.

Offensively, the Vikings were led by Harmon and Holbert. Harmon went 3-for-4, while Holbert contributed with two hits and an RBI. The Patriots' lineup, despite getting five hits, couldn't convert their chances into runs. Carly Oliver was a standout for UC, managing two hits in three at-bats.

Defensively, both teams demonstrated solid fielding, though each committed an error. Despite these errors, both teams executed double plays.

Grand View (42-14) is back in action tomorrow against Oklahoma City in game 11 at 4 p.m., while Cumberlands (40-8) will face Southern Oregon in game nine at 10 a.m..
