FRANKFORT, Ky. – (Box Score) Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) became the first No. 1 seed to advance to Saturday's NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Championships quarterfinals with a 99-62 win over fourth-seed Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho) on Friday at the Frankfort Convention Center.
FHU (34-1) will meet seven-seed Bethel University (23-10) of McKenzie, Tenn., Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT in the first quarterfinal game. It will be the first time the two schools, located 60 miles apart, will meet in the national tournament, but the 63rd all-time meeting. FHU leads the series 52-10, including an 84-74 win in November.
The Lady Lions scored the first four points of the game before Loree Hill hit a 3 to pull LCSC within a point, 4-3. However, Freed-Hardeman scored 21 unanswered points over the next six minutes to pull away early.
Hayley Newby posted a double-double in the first half with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Brittany Montgomery hit four first-half 3s to have 14 points and Grace Alonso de Armino had 10 at the break, contributing largely to Freed-Hardeman's 52-29 halftime lead.
Alonso de Armino finished with a game-high 22 points and had 10 rebounds, while Newby finished with 18 points and 13 boards. Montgomery scored 20, Cynthia Woodward had 15 and Taleeah Cross had 11.
Montgomery and Woodward both had five 3s in the game, giving Montgomery 200 3-pointers for her career. As a team, Freed-Hardeman made a 2014 tournament-high 11 3-pointers at a 55 percent clip. The Lions entered the tournament shooting 35.6 percent from 3 in national tournament games in Frankfort.
FHU shot a tournament-best 60 percent (42-for-70) overall in the game and out-rebounded the Warriors, 50 to 36.
Lewis-Clark State was led by Loree Hill and Brittaney Niebergall, who scored 13 points each.
Freed-Hardeman's 37-point win is the second-largest margin of victory in this year's tournament and 99 points is the most scored in a NAIA DI Women's Basketball Championships game since the Lady Lions lost in overtime to University of the Cumberlands, 105-99, during the second round of the 2009 tournament. FHU is the sixth team in this year's tournament, thus far, to score 90 or more points, the most in NAIA history since 1999.
Lewis-Clark State ends its season with a 27-6 record after making the tournament as the No. 5 at-large team and advancing to their fourth-consecutive second round.
