No. 5 John Brown (Ark.) Shocks No. 1 Vanguard (Calif.), 62-61
FRANKFORT, Ky. – (Box Score) For the second time in three days, the final game of the night delivered one of the biggest upsets. Five-seed John Brown (Ark.) held No. 1 seed Vanguard (Calif.) to its lowest point total of the season in a 62-61 upset to cap Friday's second round and advance to the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Championships quarterfinals.
John Brown (27-7), which entered the week 0-3 all-time in the tournament, will meet Loyola (La.) in the final quarterfinal game Saturday night at 8 p.m. EDT in the Frankfort Convention Center.
Vanguard spent all season atop the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll rankings, but dropped two of its last three games to end the season. It will be the first time in NAIA Division I Women's Basketball history that the overall No. 1 seed will not appear in the national quarterfinals. The upset came two days after Xavier (La.) became the first team to knock the defending national champs out in the first round with a win over Westmont (Calif.).
Brooke Barker hit a 3 for the first basket of the night, setting the tone for John Brown's offense. The Eagles hit 11 3-pointers in the win.
Vanguard did not take its first lead until six minutes into the game when Leigha Bednar made it 10-8 in favor of the Lions. It was the first of eight lead changes in the first half.
Kortni Barenberg hit a 3 to regain the lead for John Brown and the Eagles carried a 33-30 lead into halftime.
Vanguard went back in front to start the second half, 36-35, as both teams continued to trade leads through the night.
Sierra Shipley created the final lead change with 15:46 left to go in the game, hitting a basket to give John Brown a 40-38 lead. The Eagles maintained a one- or two-possession lead for the next 10 minutes until Samantha Doucette tied it at 51, but Lauren Rogers scored coming out of a Vanguard timeout to put JBU back in front.
Douchette hit a 3 in the corner while falling backwards with 29 seconds remaining to tie it again, but Kami Garrison managed to knock down one of two free throws with three seconds on the clock to seal the win. Taylor Belmont's attempt at the buzzer was off the mark for Vanguard.
JBU improves to 2-0 all-time against Vanguard. The first win came over then Southern California College, 76-70, during the 1986-87 season.
Shipley led the Eagles with 14 points, followed by 13 from Barenberg, 12 from Lauren Rogers and 10 by Brooke Barker. Douchette led Vanguard with 20 points, while Leigha Bednar had 15. Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year Nicole Ballestero was held to a career-low nine points after missing five minutes of the game due to injury.
Vanguard finishes its season with a 27-2 record and earned its 16th championship appearance by winning the GSAC regular season title.
