Division II Women?s Basketball Coaches? Top 25 ? No. 7
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the fourth-consecutive week, Indiana Wesleyan sits atop the 2012-13 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Wildcats collected 11-of-12 first-place votes and 312 points in the seventh regular-season edition.
Indiana Wesleyan went 2-0 last week with wins over Grace (Ind.), 67-52, on Jan. 23 and against Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio), 53-33, on Jan. 26. The Wildcats are currently on a three game win streak.
College of the Ozarks (Mo.) jumped two spots, to No. 2, with 289 points. Falling one spot to No. 3 is Concordia (Neb.) notching 283 points. No. 4 Saint Francis (Ind.) makes its first top five appearance this season as it collected 276 points. Holding steady at No. 5 is Eastern Oregon, who tallied the last first-place vote and 271 points.
Concordia (Mich.) and St. Thomas (Fla.) make the biggest jumps in the poll this week as both teams moved ahead three spots. Concordia, who jumped from No. 10 to No. 7, won the 62nd Concordia Invitational Tournament on Jan. 26 with a victory over then-No. 2 Concordia (Neb.). Currently, the Cardinals are on a four game-win streak. St. Thomas, who climbed from No. 16 to No. 13, defeated Florida Memorial, 71-50, on Jan. 26 in its only game last week. The Bobcats have won seven-straight contests.
Joining the Top 25 this week is No. 18 Roosevelt (Ill.), No. 23 William Penn (Iowa) and No. 25 Tabor (Kan.). Roosevelt, who rejoins the poll for the first time since Dec. 4, won its only match-up last week, as the Lakers defeated Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), 92-88, on Jan. 23. Roosevelt is in a three way tie for first place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). William Penn enters the Coaches' Poll for the first time since Feb. 7, 2011. The Lady Statesmen collected wins on Jan. 24 against Grand View (Iowa), 68-62, and on Jan. 26 versus St. Ambrose (Iowa), 61-60. Tabor is making its first appearance since Feb. 21, 2007 in the Top 25, and was 2-0 last week. Tabor collected wins against McPherson (Kan.), 74-55, on Jan. 24 and Bethany (Kan.), 68-39, two days later.
Three teams fell out of the Top 25: St. Ambrose (No. 18), Grand View (No. 22) and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) (No. 24).
Twelve of the 13 Division II women's basketball conferences/independents are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the CCAC and Great Plains Athletic Conference with four teams each.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and Independents. The eighth regular-season poll will be announced on Feb. 5.
Notes: (All information as of the 1999 - 2000 season) Indiana Wesleyan has appeared at the top of the poll on 29 occasions, the most of any program, followed by Morningside (Iowa) with 19... There have been 14 different teams to garner the No. 1 ranking all-time ... Three schools have spent an entire season at No. 1: Morningside in 2008-09, College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in 2007-08 and Saint Francis (Ind.) in 1999-2000... In the last 13 years, six teams that have been rated No. 1 in the preseason have gone on to win the national championship with the last being Northwestern (Iowa), which has accomplished the feat the last two years... Morningside (111) and College of the Ozarks (104) are the only teams who have been ranked in the Top 25 for over 100 consecutive weeks.
